What are autoimmune diseases?
Autoimmune diseases are a group of disorders in which the body’s immune system attacks its own tissues. This leads to chronic inflammation and a wide range of other symptoms like fatigue, skin problems, and digestive issues.
In this blog, we will explain how they occur, what are some common autoimmune diseases, and how they can be treated.
How do they occur?
The body’s immune system is built to protect against foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses. However, when we are suffering from an autoimmune disease, our body fails to recognize the difference between a healthy cell and a harmful toxin. As such, the immune system produces antibodies that attack the body’s own tissues, causing inflammation and damage. While there is still a lot of mystery surrounding the exact causes that result in our bodies behaving in this irregular way, years of research has revealed that genetic and environmental factors, like exposure to heavy metals for example play a significant role in the development of such diseases.
While any disease that is caused by the immune functioning in the above manner is called an autoimmune disease, there are several common autoimmune diseases like:
- Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis: This disease largely affects the thyroid gland, resulting in an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism).
- Graves’ Disease: Also affecting the thyroid gland, this results in an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism).
- Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD): This also includes Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis. It is distinguished by chronic inflammation in the digestive tract.
- Psoriasis: A skin condition that is characterized by the rapid buildup of skin cells. It results in scaly and itchy patches of skin.
- Rheumatoid Arthritis: This disease causes inflammation in the joints, leading to pain, stiffness, and swelling.
- Lupus: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) can affect various parts of the body, including the skin, joints, kidneys, and brain.
- Type I diabetes: The immune system attacks the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, leading to high blood sugar levels.
